The properties of soft magnetic materials, such as maximum induction, coercivity, permeability, and specific loss, determine the final properties of devices, including their efficiency. The basic materials used as magnetic cores in transformers and electric motors are grain-oriented and non-oriented electrical steels. These have very good magnetic properties, but also some disadvantages (e.g. relatively high specific loss) that limit their use in high-frequency applications or power electronic devices. For many years, intensive material research has been conducted to improve the properties of conventional magnetic materials as well as to develop magnetic materials with unique properties. The results of this research are new types of soft magnetic materials, such as amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys, high-silicon electrical steels, and magnetic composites. The paper presents the properties of contemporary soft magnetic materials, their advantages, and disadvantages compared to electrical steels, and the possible benefits of their use as magnetic core materials. Pro-ecological and economic aspects of their application will also be discussed.

Short Bio:

Mariusz Najgebauer was born in 1976in Czestochowa (Poland).
